What is law firm SEO?
Law firm SEO is the work of making a law firm appear in Google when someone searches for legal help, such as “personal injury lawyer Houston” or “divorce attorney near me”. Most of these searches name a practice area and a place, so law firm SEO is mostly local SEO applied to legal services.
Google answers these searches with ads, a map showing three firms, and then the regular results. The map depends on your Google Business Profile, your reviews and your distance from the person searching. The regular results depend on your website: one strong page per practice area and per city, a fast site, and links from trusted local and legal sources.
Legal searches are competitive because one client can be worth a lot to a firm. That is why structure matters more than volume: a clear site where each practice area has its own page does better than a large site where everything sits on one services page.
Signs your firm needs SEO work
- Your firm does not appear in the map results for your main practice area in your city.
- All your practice areas share one page, so none of them ranks well.
- Directories list a different address or phone number for your firm.
- Most new clients come from referrals or paid ads, and almost none from Google.
- You serve several cities or counties with one generic page.
What law firm SEO work includes
Six pieces of work, in the order that usually brings consultations fastest.
Practice area page structure
One page per practice area, and per city where you have an office or serve clients. Each page explains the client's situation, what the firm does and how to get in touch. This is the structure behind the U.S. law firm case study below.
Google Business Profile for law firms
The most precise primary category (for example “Personal injury attorney” rather than “Lawyer”), secondary categories for other practice areas, services, service area, photos and a description that follows Google's guidelines.
Legal and local citations
Your firm's name, address and phone number made consistent across legal directories (Avvo, Justia, FindLaw, Martindale-Hubbell) and general ones (Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect).
Review routine
A simple routine for asking satisfied clients for reviews and replying to each one, without revealing anything about the client's matter.
Technical and on-page fixes
Titles and headings that name the practice area and the city, LegalService schema markup, fast mobile pages, and fixes for the indexing problems Search Console reports.
Lead tracking
Calls, form submissions and consultation bookings tracked in GA4, so you know which practice area pages bring cases.

Tools and data for law firm SEO
Legal rankings change from one city to the next, so they are measured where your clients search.
- Google Search Console
- Shows which practice area searches bring visitors, and which pages Google does not index.
- Google Business Profile
- Calls, website clicks and direction requests from the map results.
- BrightLocal
- Tracks map rankings by city and checks citations across legal and general directories.
- Screaming Frog
- Crawls the site to find duplicate practice area pages, missing titles and broken links.
- Google Analytics 4
- Measures calls, forms and bookings by landing page.
Law firm SEO vs. Google Ads for lawyers
Google Ads puts your firm at the top of the page from the first day, and stops the day you stop paying. Legal keywords are among the most expensive in Google Ads, so each click can cost a firm a lot.
SEO takes months to build, but the rankings, reviews and pages keep bringing clients without a cost per click. Many firms use both: ads for immediate cases while SEO grows, then less ad spend as organic rankings take over.
