What is GA4 conversion tracking?
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is Google's analytics platform. It records what visitors do on your website as events: a page view, a click on a phone number, a form submission. Conversion tracking means marking the events that create leads, so you can see exactly where those leads come from.
Google Tag Manager sends those events to GA4 and Google Ads without editing the website code each time. Looker Studio turns the data into a dashboard anyone on your team can read.
Without conversion tracking you see traffic but not results. With it, every page, keyword and campaign can be judged by the leads it brings.
Signs your tracking needs work
- You have GA4 but do not trust the numbers.
- You cannot tell which pages or campaigns bring form submissions, calls or WhatsApp messages.
- Your Google Ads conversions do not match what really happens.
- You still look only at pageviews and sessions.
- Monthly reports take hours to put together.
What the GA4 setup includes
Five parts, tested end to end before you rely on them.
GA4 advanced configuration
Data streams, data retention, internal traffic filters, cross-domain settings and the links to Google Ads and Search Console, set up correctly from the start.
Google Tag Manager setup
A clean container with clear naming, so tags, triggers and variables are easy to maintain and nothing fires twice.
Custom event & conversion tracking
Form submissions, phone and WhatsApp clicks, email clicks, bookings and other key actions tracked as events and marked as conversions.
Looker Studio dashboards
One dashboard with leads by page, source, campaign and device, updated automatically.
Conversion funnel visualization
A funnel report that shows where visitors drop off between landing on a page and becoming a lead.

Handover
I walk you through the dashboard and the list of events, so your team can use the data from day one.
Tools behind the setup
All of them are free Google tools, so there is no extra subscription to pay.
- Google Analytics 4
- Stores your events and conversions and reports on them.
- Google Tag Manager
- Sends events to GA4 and Google Ads without code changes for every update.
- Looker Studio
- Builds dashboards from GA4, Search Console and Google Ads data.
- Google Ads
- Imports GA4 conversions so campaigns are measured on real leads.
- Tag Assistant
- Tests that every tag fires once, at the right moment.
GA4 vs. Google Tag Manager
GA4 is where your data is stored and reported. Google Tag Manager is where tracking is configured and sent. You can run GA4 without Tag Manager, but every new event then needs a developer to edit the site.
Universal Analytics, the previous version of Google Analytics, stopped collecting data in July 2023, so GA4 is now the standard for every website.
